If you’re planning on driving in Cambodia, you should probably get a driving license.

Types of vehicles:
A1: 49-125cc motorbikes and scooters
A: motorbikes larger than 125cc
B: passenger vehicles (less than 9 passengers)

For those who hold international driving license can do a transfer to the Cambodian driving license and they will get a one year driving license. This needs to be renewed every year. If you pass the written and driving test, you will get a driving license which is valid for 10 years.
Cambodia Driving License

On January 1st 2016, the laws stated that motorbikes that are 125cc or smaller do not need to have a license, however; it was never stated clearly if this only applies to Cambodians or also applies to foreigners. According to the updates in 2019, they have set out the law saying that those who are not Cambodian need to have a license to drive in Cambodia. Getting a license in Cambodia is not too much of a hassle but most expats tend to just pay the fine when the police stopped them. The fine is now a very small amount but it is going to get more severe the future for those who drive without a license.

How To Get A License?

The places that you can get their 1 year Cambodian driving license is Aeon Mall 2 or at the General Department of Public Works and Transport. Only those who are Cambodians can get the 1 year driving license at the Aeon 1. At the Aeon 2, on the second floor next to the Cambodia Post Office, there is a place called Driver’s License Service Center. There, you will have to show them the documents and take the eye sight test which will be paid in cash and the license by Wing or Smart Luy. The whole process takes less than an hour.

At the General Department of Public Works and Transport, you will have to show them the license from your country (a notarized translation may also be required). Then you will be directed to another building to have your passport, license and visa photocopied. There is another building where you will take your eye sight test, after that you will be given a receipt to take back to the licensing office. At the licensing office, you are required to show all the documents and photocopies to several people who will sign on them. The letter from the Sangkat will be reviewed closely on the information such as your passport details and visa number. Once everyone has signed, you will be directed to the Wing booth.

The residency permit that you use at the GDPWT must state that it is for the purpose of getting a driving license. The office closes from 11:30 AM - 2:00 PM for lunch, so you will have to get there early to finish the whole process early. The international license must have at least 30 days validity at the time of the application.
